San Diego Zoo Faces Heartbreaking Loss: Three Beloved Animals Pass Away in Days
24 August 2025
Tragic Loss at the San Diego Zoo
So, you know, it's been a pretty rough patch over at the San Diego Zoo lately. Imagine, three of their beloved residents - a polar bear, giraffe, and gorilla - all passed away within just a few days of each other. Really hits you in the feels, doesn't it?
Maka the Gorilla's Untimely Passing
Let's start with the most recent sad news from Monday, when Maka, a Western lowland gorilla who had been at the zoo for all of his 30 years, suddenly died from a heart issue. Just four days before that, another heartbreaker hit. Both Kalluk, who was a wise 24-year-old polar bear, and Nicky, a grand 28-year-old Masai giraffe, had to be put down on the same day. Tough decision, but it was all to spare them more pain as they were approaching their final moments.
Nicki Boyd, who's pretty much seen it all in her role at the zoo, overseeing mammals and all, was like, 'This is just too much at once.' Can you even begin to imagine?
The Legacy of Kalluk and Nicky
These three weren't just any animals. They were practically local celebrities, stars that not only drew crowds but also taught us a lot about conservation and the importance of protecting endangered species.
The drama started back on August 14 when the team decided to check on Kalluk after noticing he wasn't himself. Turned out, his kidneys were failing. That news was a real gut punch for everyone, especially since Kalluk wasn't just any bear. He'd been there since he was a cub in 2001, after he and his sister got orphaned. Always the thinker, Kalluk was also a big bro to Chinook, another polar bear who had lost her family.
Taking care of Kalluk had allowed the zoo to help with tons of polar bear conservation projects — think of it as his legacy helping his wild cousins.
Then there's Nicky, the matriarch of her giraffe family and perhaps the oldest giraffe in North America. Just before saying goodbye, she helped a new giraffe mom with her baby — talk about being a leader till the end! The care team made sure her last moments were peaceful, surrounded by love, and full of her favorite treats.
The Impact of Maka
Unfortunately, the zoo staff had barely had time to process all of this when Maka's death came as the next blow. Maka had been quite the figure too, leading the other gorillas with wisdom only an elder could offer.
Throughout his life, he dealt with health issues, including chromosomal abnormalities and seizures, but that didn't stop him from being a beacon of strength. His passing during a routine check-up was a shock that no one saw coming.
Boyd, who's been with the zoo for over three decades, mentioned this was the first time three beloved animals had died so closely together. Each of these animals had a story, a personality, and a journey that impacted not only the zoo but also everyone who visited or worked there.
Commemorating Their Memories
Knowing they had full, cared-for lives provides some solace, but saying goodbye... that's never easy, is it? To help everyone cope, the zoo has even created stickers of Nicky, Kalluk, and soon Maka, which kind of keeps their memories alive in a small, touching way.
The collective mourning has gone public too, with loads of people and even other zoos sending in their condolences and support through social media. It's a small comfort, but it shows just how much these animals meant to not just their caretakers, but to a whole community of animal lovers out there.
Here’s to Kalluk, Nicky, and Maka — may their stories remind us of the beauty and fragility of life and the impact we can have on these magnificent creatures.
